In celebration of International Women's Day, Bonhams has selected several pieces of pearl jewellery from the 20th and 21st centuries at an upcoming online auction.
The sale, which will be held from March 8 to 12 under the theme "Powerful and Beautiful: Online Pearl Auction", will feature 60 pieces of pearl jewellery, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and brooches, in styles ranging from classic to contemporary. According to the auction house, the collection can be paired with any outfit, whether formal or casual. "Pearls have been known for their beautiful and lustrous appearance for thousands of years, and the wonderful stories associated with pearls have attracted attention," said Emily Waterfall, head of jewelry at Bonhams in Los Angeles. They are the symbol of Aphrodite Muse, Eve and Cleopatra. Historically, pearls have been mined in extremely dangerous ways and had to be excavated by hand from the depths of the ocean. "
Waterfall added that until the 20th century, rare and expensive pearls were owned by the wealthiest royalty.
Highlights of the sale include an 18K white gold necklace adorned with cultured pearls and spiked sapphires, pink corundum and yellow corundum; and a 14K white gold bracelet in platinum adorned with cultured pearls and diamonds.
Bonhams pointed out: "Pearls have been an important symbol of elegance and strength throughout history, and they have been worn by many famous female figures, including the famous painting'Vermeer's elusive Girl with a Pearl Earring ', Audrey Hepburn, who played Holly Golightly in the interior of'Breakfast at Tiffany's', and He Jinli, the vice president at the recent inauguration. As Coco Chanel and Marie Antoinette saw pearls as the embodiment of delicacy, and Jackie Kennedy once said, 'Pearls are always proper,' pearls are essential to strong women. "
